In The Field

Ian Chappell of the Central Yorkshire Scout County reports on their second mission into The Sahara:

In August 2016, forty-six Explorer Scouts and Leaders from Central Yorkshire Scout County took part in an expedition to Morocco. They climbed Jbel Toubkal (4167 meters/13672 feet) and trekked with camels in Erg Chebbi for three days, wild camping for two nights.

The main purpose of the expedition was to support the Children of the Sahara Foundation at the Hannan School, El Borj, in the Middle Atlas.

The young people, aged from 15 to 18 years, and leaders, helped to construct the foundations for the first phase of rooms for the proposed new school building. The expedition had raised funds in the UK to support this work.

The Hannan Charity has purchased land at El Borj to construct a school to allow village children to have a full education up to university age—something that is not possible for every child at this time.

Whilst working on the project the Explorer Scouts had the opportunity to visit families in the village and see their lives first hand. For all of the young people it was a very profound experience.
