Projects

Sahara Children has partnered with The Hannan School Morocco and The Central Yorkshire Scouts to help fund a new project. Through the Hannan School, the Yorkshire Scouts will share in the diversity of Morocco at a very local level. Thirty-six boys and girls, all scouts, aged from 15 to 18 years, will share experiences with the Berber community of El Borj as they undertake preparatory construction work for the school, and teach first aid and IT skills to local instructors. By spending time at El Borj, the scouts will widen their understanding and appreciation of cultural differences, enabling them to make a positive contribution to society.

The Hannan Charity began in 2003 as the Faith School El Borj. The organization was the vision of Hmad and Hannah Naatit to bring education and hope to the Berber Village of El Borj in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Berber people are warm, generous, hardworking people but are very poor. Hmad is a child of the village of El Borj, one of the fortunate few sent to school. He earned two degrees: Science Mathematics at Marrakech University and Electro-Mechanical Engineering at Kharkov Polytechnic University Ukraine.

Most of his family and others in the village cannot read or write and Hmad along with his wife Hannah wanted to change that. Both see education as a way out of the cycle of poverty which engulfs the Berber people in the rural areas. Currently there are sixty-nine children being sponsored either attending the government school or the Hannan Charity’s pre-school which opened in January 2010. The charity has also bought a piece of land (1000 square meters/3281 feet). The aim is to build their own school where the children will have a spacious learning environment and access to modern technology.

The scouts will make their trip in August 2014. Sahara Children is proud to support this mission.
